Today, 32% of firms in the S&P 500 of big American companies invest more in intangible assets than in physical ones, and 61% of the market value of the S&P 500 sit in intangibles such as research and development (R&D), customers linked by network effects, brands and data.
The link between the CEO authorizing investments and getting results is unpredictable and opaque. To maximize the return on investments, innovation management is the highest priority for all CEOs, yet many of them find the innovation performances below their expectations.
